These flags are placed in honor of my Dad who went to be with the Lord in 2020. My Dad served in the Air Force and was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. He loved his country and the ideals it represented. When I was growing up, he would quietly and respectfully hang the American flag on the front porch every Sunday. He didn’t lecture us about its meaning but we knew it was important by his example. Every summer he would host his own Flags for Freedom, putting dozens of American flags in his front yard. It was a sight to see! He would be honored to be a part of this important event.

This American flag will be flown in loving memory of Joseph “Joe” Speer (1919-1989) who served honorably as Signalman First Class in the United States Navy during WWII. When not at work, you could find him either on a ball field as a coach or umpire, the golf course, or somewhere with a fishing pole. He had the biggest heart, loved children, and happily spent his last couple of years with his first two granddaughters. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will forever be greatly missed.

A flag is dedicated to my World War II hero, Cecil T. Harrelson, my father. He served honorably in the Army Air Corps, carrying with him countless stories of the battles he endured and the battered ship that carried him across treacherous waters. By the grace of God, he returned home safely.

A second flag is in honor of Jerry T. Harrelson, my brother. He was a proud Navy veteran who served for eight years, answering his country's call through the Vietnam War and multiple tours of duty. By God's blessing, he made it home.​

In Honor of My Beloved Wife: My wife devoted her life to reaching children and teenagers with the love of Jesus. Around the world, she trained leaders, encouraged churches, and inspired countless people to invest in the next generation. She never sought recognition, only that young hearts would come to know Christ.

 

Today, dementia has taken much of her memory. I wish she could see what I still see: generations of lives changed because she faithfully answered God's call. Though she no longer remembers the seeds she planted, God has never forgotten them. The fruit of her life's work continues to grow. She got me involved years ago and it has changed me and has become my mission as well.

 

It is now my privilege to care for the woman who spent her life caring for me and so many others. I miss the conversations, the laughter, and the brilliant mind that blessed so many. But my love for her has only grown deeper.

 

My dear, one day your mind will be fully restored, and together we will rejoice as we see the eternal impact of your faithful life. Until then, I will remember enough for both of us.
